This branch of the Imperial War Museum is Britain’s largest aviation museum and is located in an historic aerodrome in the Cambridgeshire village of Duxford. Nearly 200 aircraft, military vehicles, artillery, and navy vessels are all on show in this awesome museum.
Explore and learn
The museum has a fascinating range of interactive and hands on exhibitions that are sure to thrill your kids and educate them at the same time! Choose “Battle of Britain” which explains the story of Britain’s finest hour and explores how it was won. Visit the 1940s Operation Room – a reconstruction of where Duxford’s fighter aircraft were directed in to combat during the Battle of Britain. Enter the American Air Museum displaying a fine collection of American combat aircraft – there is so much to see and do, make sure you plan your visit carefully to see what you want to see first!
You can choose to extend your kid’s understanding of these important periods of history by joining in one of the learning programmes offered by the museum. This extensive schedule caters for children of all ages and understanding. Far from being text book led, this is an interactive and exciting attraction for visitors of all ages. There’s even a special Family section to the programme, meaning you can all learn in a fun way and together – activites include tasting food from that time, sitting in an ejector seat and being a Duxford Detective!
Up, up and away
Duxford remains a working airfield and you can take pleasure flights above the museum to bring the exhibits to life – you can even take part in a flying experience – imagine making that the grand finale of the day for your family!
You could plan your day to Duxford to coincide with one of the special events organised by the museum. The American Air Day, The Battle of Britain Air Show and the Autumn Air Show are all important dates in the aviation calendar and would be a thrilling addition to your day out.
