Mountfitchet Castle and Norman Village

Transport yourself and your family back in time to the Norman era of 1066 at Mountfitchet Castle. With its commanding position overlooking the Stort Valley, it’s a day out in Essex that combines education with real life experiences in a wonderful setting.

Unique time capsule

The castle is so historically accurate that it is now a Historic Monument fully protected by the Department of the Environment. It’s also been voted as Essex Attraction of the Year by Good Britain Guide. Originally the site was home to an Iron Age hill fort, then a Roman signals fort and after that a Saxon and Viking settlement! Take some time to visit the Duke’s bedroom, the prison, the kitchen and walk through an extensive Norman village.

Special Events at the Castle

Mountfitchet Castle plays host to a number of historical events throughout the year and combining your visit with one of these special days could be the making of your day out in Essex!

Don’t be surprised if you see animals wandering around the grounds of the castle, it’s home to many animals, each with their own stories. You can see deer, lambs, chickens, goats plus much more all now enjoying a much happier life in fairytale surroundings. The staff at the castle make it their duty to ensure the animals can roam feely around the grounds giving visitors the chance to get close to them and appreciate their natural appeal. Feed for the deer, goats, sheep, peacocks, ducks, turkeys and chickens can be bought from the visitor centre to enhance your family’s experience with the animals.

House on the Hill Toy Museum

The toy museum at Mountfitchet is the largest privately-owned toy museum in Europe boasting over 80,000 individual items from the late Victorian era right through to the 1990s. Rekindle your own memories of old toys and help teach your children about the history of toys.
