County Down Railway

In the shadow of the picturesque Down Cathedral you’ll find the wonderful Downpatrick & County Down Railway. Take all the family for a super day out in Northern Ireland and you’ll have a day to remember!

World of Steam

Spend an afternoon discovering the world of steam. Start with a guided tour of the exhibition and workshops to learn about the history of the railway and how it operates and then it’s time to board a restored section of the former Belfast and County Down Railway’s old line, enveloped in steam and absolutely thrilling. The train makes its way one way to a ruined Inch Abbey and the other way to the burial mound of Viking King Magnus Barefoot.

All Aboard!

Make the most of this great setting and dismount and explore the area – you can return on a later train once you’re done looking round. Railway enthusiasts can book a day’s experience on the footplate, driving diesel, as well as firing and driving an awesome steam locomotive!

Workshops and Signal Cabin

As well as an exhilarating train ride, you can tour the workshops and the signal cabin to see first-hand behind-the-scenes activities in progress. Staffed entirely by volunteers the passion for this place and the locomotives is evident from the enthusiasm from everyone you’ll meet on your day out.

Buffet Carriage

Back on the station platform you can treat yourself to a visit to the buffet carriage, serving tea, coffee, soft drinks and buns for thirsty travellers. In the station you’ll find a shop brimming with railway themed stock whilst upstairs there’s a small photo exhibition as well as a Thomas the Tank engine model railway layout – the kids will love it all!

Highlight of the Day

Thomas the Tank Engine model railway – delightful!
