Castlecomer Discovery Park offers the promise of a wonderful family day out where you can wander in the marvellous grounds of Castlecomer House, explore the woodland walks and linger for a spot of picnicking.
Heart of Wandesforde Estate
Castlecomer sits at the confluence of three rivers and is the unofficial capital of North Kilkenny. Castlecomer Discovery Park is set within the grounds of Castlecomer House, a former mansion that was once the heart of Wandesforde Estate. This large expanse of parkland and mixed woodland is the setting for a variety of activities and events that will easily fill a day out.
The Visitor Centre is exceptional and is located in the estate’s former farmyard, just beside the kitchen gardens. Restored old buildings serve as units full of very interesting craft works. Within the Visitor Centre there is the chance to experience a fascinating interactive programme entitled “Footprints in Coal” which tells the story of 300 years of local coal mining and also the miners’ discovery of many important fossils during their underground operations.
Themed Woodland Walks
The grounds are extensive and adjoin the River Deen with 4 miles of brilliant themed woodland walks. There are colour coded nature trails to make everything easy and there are interlinking paths around the two fishing lakes linked by cascades. Pass by a number of wooden sculptures along the way and choose one of the many secluded picnic areas to enjoy a spot of lunch. Alternatively you can eat at the Park’s Jarrow Cafe which is excellent.
A hit with the under 14s, the children’s playground at Castlecomer’s Discovery Park offers hours of energetic fun on themed timber apparatus reflecting the prehistoric and mining themes that are prevalent throughout the Footprints in Coal exhibition at the Centre.
Highlight of the Day
